Definition and shortcut keys of  File Menu Options In MS Word 2010


  1. New (Ctrl +N):- This option is used to create a new document/ file. For this, we can either click on the New option in File Tab or by using short cut key Ctrl +N.
  2. Open (Ctrl + O):- This option is used to open an existing or already saved document/ file. For this, we can either use the Open option or use the short cut key Ctrl +O. This will open a dialog box (by default it opens the Documents window). From where we can open the desired file. If the file doesn’t exist in the Document window, we can change the location where the file exists. Another option is navigate to the location where the file exists, double click on the desired file icon or right click on the file and click on open.
  3. Save (Ctrl + S):- This option is used to save the new create file or save the changes in the existing file. We can use the save option available in File Tab or by pressing the combination of Ctrl + S short cut key. If your file is new, then it will open a Save As Dialog box, where you can save it with suitable name or location(By default it will save in the Documents) otherwise it will save the changes quietly without prompting you a dialog box. The extension of word file is .docx.
  4. Save As (F12):- This option is used to save a new file or an existing file with different name in the same location or different location (because two files with the same name doesn’t exist in the same location therefore we can save the file with the same name at another location). By this option, we can also change the format of file (like PDF,RTF etc ) or we can protect it by giving password (Password to open or password to modify)
  5. Print (Ctrl + P):- This option is used to print a whole or parts of document either use of available option or by using short cut key Ctrl +P.
  6. Close (Ctrl +W or Alt +W):- By this option we can close the current window not the whole application.
  7. Exit (Alt + F4):- By this option we can exit from the application.
